MY NAME IS MINAMI
Japanese Illustrator based in Hong Kong
Hi, I'm Minami—the founder of MimiJ Design.
I am from Japan and have been living in Hong Kong for the past 6 years. I am also a mum to two beautiful kids.
While I didn’t start my career as a professional artist, I always loved to draw growing up. After graduating from university, I worked in advertising sales, which brought me further away from my passion for art.
I began my journey as a professional artist when I had my first child. I decided to follow my passion and studied art. I wanted to start something new, something that I love, and something that my children would be proud of.
I started by posting my illustrations on Instagram. Doing something that I love brought me an abundance of joy and the many positive feedback I received was a welcome surprise and a source of encouragement to pursue art professionally.
A large portion of the job requests I receive are for birthdays, weddings and celebrations. Because the illustrations are for such joyous and meaningful occasions, I pour in a lot of effort and emotion to draw each piece. From the photos I receive from my clients, I transfer the essence of the individual from photo to illustration with the delicate, soft strokes of watercolors. No moment in life is too small to capture in drawing— a meaningful and appreciated gift no matter what the occasion.
